Eight-year-old Wade Parker grows up in 1950's Los Angeles...

...His alcoholic father left the family, and his overworked mother is emotionally absent. Wade looks after his 6-year-old brother Luke. When a late-night escapade puts the boys afoul of a terrifying man called Scar, events unfold that will change their lives. The resulting heartaches and betrayals---including murder and attempted suicide---seem too tangled for even God to unravel. Wade must choose between his earthly father's lifestyle or the healing touch of his heavenly father. Morris wrenches the heart with this bright and poignant coming-of-age story. The vivid literary voice pleases the inner ear, but at times overpowers the plot.
